I got a text from a friend yesterday about this happening Warners is pulling Jupiter Ascending from schedule for July. No shit. six weeks out and they’re pulling it.
Yes, the $150 million dollar film JUPITER ASCENDING set to release July 18th and that has been promoted for months and even got moved up a week back in December… is now pulled at the last minute and has been moved to February 2015.
This was going to be the next big ‘epic’ from the Wachowski siblings, Lana and Andy, and many thought it would do very well at the box office.
I was in a “wait and see” mode on this film. The biggest issue I found immediately was I questioned the casting of Channing Tatum and still do. He’s pretty to look at but more or less talentless.
It’s not like it used to be where February and March were the dumping grounds for films the studios didn’t have faith in. There have been some major successes there in the last few years including this years LEGO movie. But to pull a film this close to release…
It appears that the official reason the studio will be giving is that the digital effects for the film aren’t done and this move will give the Wachowskis time to complete them. This is what Deadline.com is going with as their headline for the story. I’m not totally sold on this. One story I heard was that about two months ago at a screening of the film the effects were over 70% done.
The other opinion that is going around is that the test screenings for the film have gone poorly. Some people think this is a move from Warners to get time to recut and rework the film.
The third opinion I’ve heard is that Warners realized the film slate this summer is too packed and Jupiter would have been slaughtered in the mix. I’m leaning more toward this combined with opinion #2
As the day progresses I’m expecting to hear more about this stunning news and by the end of the weekend I’m sure the real story will emerge.
